April 07, 2008SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY — Ever wonder what you could do in one day with just one dollar? The answer is, "a lot," if you look at the success of last year's Hunger Awareness Day, when the community gave more than $125,000 to the San Luis Obispo County Food Bank Coalition.
The Food Bank hopes to top last year's success when Hunger Awareness Day returns countywide on Tuesday, June 10. If every resident gives a dollar on that one day, the Food Bank can continue to provide nutritious food for hungry people in this county even though need is rising and food costs are soaring.
Now, the Food Bank is once again making it easy to give with a cyber campaign fund drive supported by a toll-free phone line and numerous local collection sites. A simple click to www.slofoodbank.org or phone call on June 10 will get the job done.
The Food Bank is also issuing a challenge to county and city officials, media, local business owners, teachers and school kids, retirees, churches, civic organizationsÐ everyone they can think of Ð to make this a 100-percent effort to give a dollar on June 10 to fight hunger in San Luis Obispo County.
Because of the Food Bank Coalition's extensive network of produce growers and brokers, markets and wholesalers, and America's Second Harvest, the best contribution anyone can make is cash. "With our resources for free or low-cost food, One Dollar, One Day allows us to really make a dollar stretch," said Carl Hansen, spokesman for the Food Bank Coalition.
The Food Bank Coalition uses the money to acquire food and distribute it to 156 nonprofit groups to feed thousands of hungry people and support its own BackPack Program, Senior Brown Bag Program, and Harvest Bag Program – all to help low-income people of all ages have healthy food on their table. More than 30,000 local residents benefit annually from Food Bank efforts.
The Food Bank Coalition and One Dollar, One Day Chair Doug Major challenge everyone organize early and get together with coworkers, classmates, friends, family and associates to initiate their own challenges to collect those dollars and make a contribution on Hunger Awareness Day, Tuesday, June 10.
